10 Steps to Effective Goals

Ten steps to achieve ANY desired outcome.

The  more you can visualize your end result, the more likely it is to come true.  This is a basic premise of Attraction Marketing.  You will attract what you want in life.  So the more specific you can be about what you want, the better.

Here’s a quick 10-step process to help you really hone in on the specifics of your goals:

1)  First of all, make sure it is YOUR desire.  You will not be successful if you are trying to achieve something to make someone else happy.  It must be a desire from your core.  Just because your husband wants you to lose weight, or your mother wants you to be a lawyer, or your best friend wants you to become his business partner, if it is not something that YOU want to do for yourself, it will not likely happen easily for you.

 2)   Have you ever set a New Year’s Resolution, and then abandoned it 2 weeks later?  Why?  Because you didn’t commit to it.  If you set a goal, you have to make a promise to yourself that you will follow through.  Call it a Promise to Yourself.  Studies have shown that people tend to keep promises because there is a psychological need to keep a promise, but there is no need to achieve a goal.

 3)  You have to get very, very specific.   Clearly identify your Promise  with as much detail as possible.  Every Promise must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time-Specific).  Instead of saying “I will recruit 10 people in my business this month,”  state, “I will have 10 new recruits from my blog and autoresponder emails before August 15.”

4)  What is it that motivates  you and keeps you pumped up?   Identify your Personal Positive Motivators  and keep them in your mind.  “When I achieve this goal, I am taking my wife on a long weekend to Aruba.”  Write it out and put them in places where you will see them several times a day.

 5)   Create a Specific Promise Plan

                   – What is your objective?

                   – When will you achieve it?

                   – Where will the achievement be met?

                   – Why are you doing it?

                   – Whose help do you need to accomplish it?

                   – How many steps will it take to get there?

A really neat, and effective twist on this is a technique discussed in the book (and movie) The Secret.  When you are visualizing an end result, get out a piece of paper and write out a diary entry for the day you expect to acheive your goal.  It will be something like this:  Date: August 12, 2010.  Dear Diary,  What a great day!  I have my 10 new recruits from my blog and email autoresponder and I actually have more.  I’m so excited that I made it, and looking back on it, I can’t believe how easy it was.  All I had to do was …  and then write out a list of up to 50 things you “did” to achieve your goal.  When you write it out in this matter, you are instructing the Universe to make it happen because you are already imagining it as done.  Try it.  It works.

6)   Review your Plan and Promise EVERY DAY.  Use visual reminders, index cards, posters, photos, Pocket Promise – whatever works for YOU.

 7)    Assume that you’ve already succeeded at whatever it is you set out to do and ACT like you’ve already succeeded.  You have to BELIEVE.  Self-talk, self-affirmation WORKS.  Henry Ford was right: “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you’re right.”  The size of the success is determined by the size of the belief.

 8)   Tell others of your Promise – but stay away from nay-sayers.  If they are not supportive, do not look to them for support.  If you need help with something, Ask.  Do not let pride keep you from your goals.

9)    Envision the result constantly – see the conclusion.  Employ “reverse worry” – any time you feel worried, turn it around and think of all you have to be grateful for.  Assume you will be successful and do not stress about it.  Stress will cause you to fail.  Have belief in yourself.

10)           Get started TODAY.
